Martinek and Martens Triumph in Wolves XC Series 1

55 runners including young Reid ran in the 2014 Summer’s End Road Race in Fairview on Saturday

Wolves Athletics Club runners Eric Martinek and Mirelle Martens topped their respective races at 2014 Wolves XC Running Series 1- The  Summer’s End Road Race in Fairview on Saturday.

Martinek, a 21 year old University of Alberta student,  dominated the featured 9.8 km distance, recording a time of 32:36.  His margin of victory was nearly 10 minutes over runner-up, high school student Morgan Luken from Fairview.  Former Wolves runner Deneb Carias placed third.

Amber Hunter from Grande Prairie was the first women in the 9.8 km distance, clocking a time of 47:47.

In the 5.3 km event, Martens, who will run and play soccer for GPRC this fall, was nearly as dominant as Martinek.  She won by  3+ minutes over second placer  Shane MaisongAmos Wiebe finished third.

Aidan Ropchan won the Kid’s 800m event; Ainsley Mueller was the first girl.

A total of 55 runners completed the courses, doubling the number of finishers from the 2013 event.

Event 2 in the 2014 Wolves XC Running Series, the Steve Burgess Memorial goes Saturday, September 13 in Grande Prairie.
